DOULA
du -'la

A Greek word meaning
“woman’s servant” or “handmaiden.”

Now refers to a supportive companion (not a friend or
loved one) who is trained

and experienced in child-
birth, who provides physical, emotional, and informational support to women and their partners during labor and
birth.
